CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS (Starting May 7th)
Brian Newby (he/him/his), PhD, CAADC, LMSW is a compassionate and insightful therapist who supports individuals on their journeys of identity exploration, human sexuality, addiction recovery, and healing from grief. With a PhD in Sociology earned in 2014, Brian first served as a professor, teaching courses on human sexuality, technology, and social issues. His path eventually led him from academia into the mental health field, where he provided substance use counseling to Delaware’s incarcerated population.
Drawing on his background as a social psychologist, Brian brings a thoughtful, multi-layered perspective to therapy—considering not just the individual, but also the broader social and political environments that shape their experiences. He creates a space where clients feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
As a social psychologist, he approaches therapy with an understanding that our identities and experiences—especially within the LGBTQ+ community—are shaped not only by who we are as individuals, but also by the communities we belong to and the broader social and political forces that impact our lives.
Drawing on elements of philosophy, mysticism, art, and the richness of diverse cultural symbolism, Brian’s therapeutic approach honors the belief that each of us is the protagonist of our own unique story. He sees therapy as a collaborative journey—one where we not only come to better understand ourselves, but also deepen our connection to the world around us. This journey can include reclaiming identity, rewriting narratives, and finding strength in authenticity. Brian provides a safe, affirming space where each client is supported in gaining insight, building resilience, and taking meaningful steps toward a more fulfilling life.
Brian’s work centers on helping clients cultivate a genuine and empowered sense of self in their everyday lives. Through therapeutic skills training and motivational support, he helps individuals move closer to the person they want to be. His practice incorporates evidence-based tools from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), guiding clients in facing themselves with compassion and embracing every part of who they are.
